Our Grown-Up Bed

Tax returns are nice. So a long time ago, I got pushed by some one who will remain nameless because it's complicated. If you really want to know ask me later. Any way, this person shoved me so hard I got whiplash that never healed properly. So when I was 18 and living in the dorms at the University of my choosing, I had horrible headaches and backaches. My mother took me to the chiropractor. He helped me, but he also told me that the dorm beds were probably not helping me any. So I moved out of the dorms the next year of school to the home where I met my husband. That bed probably wasn't any better, but after I got married, my husband and I slept on a futon for a few months. That really did me in. So four months after being married I told my husband no more! I could not deal with the back aches and the pains, so we went and got a mattress and a grown-up bed with a headboard and a foot board. It was nice to have it and my back felt better almost immediately. Then we moved and the awesome bed got taken apart. Kurtis put it back together wrong, and it broke. So when we moved to our home where we live now, I bought just a bed frame. Apparently, I bought a really bad one (but it was cheap!). The last month or so, my back started to hurt again. I told Mr. Kurtis that we should get a new mattress sometime. He said okay. Then I decide we should just do it with our tax return. Brilliant! So we went mattress shopping (as I said in a previous post). Wednesday, the mattress was delivered and the guy who delivered it asked me if it had been sagging in the middle. I told him it was. He told us it was because our bed frame had no middle bar to support the mattress. He also told me that if we didn't get one for the new mattress it would void the warranty. So I said we should get a new bed! We went to IKEA and got a new grown-up bed and two nightstands that matched. We've never had nightstands! So now we are grown-ups, even though sometimes, we really don't want to admit it. Now all I have to do is get used to there being a foot board there so the bruises on my thighs go away! Here it is in all it's glory:

I Saw the Movie Titanic

Well, I have been meaning to do this, but I just couldn't bring myself to blog about it. I think I am finally ready, so, here goes. A couple of weeks ago, I went to Blockbuster on my way to play rehearsals. It was a night when Mr. Kurtis was not feeling very well, so I went to get him some movies to watch while I had to be gone (Thank goodness. I really don't enjoy the moaning that accompanies every illness. Why are men so wimpy when they get sick?). So nice of me, right? Any way, he wanted to see the Matrix again, but apparently so did everybody else in town because they were out. Instead we rented The Dark Knight, and I also got Wall-E for the kids. I went to check out and the store clerk informed me that I was able to get two free movies! Really? Awesome! But they couldn't be new releases. So, thinking that I would go by myself and find something that I wanted to see, the clerk starts following me to help me pick out a movie. She asked what I was in the mood for. Um, a romantic comedy? I stammered. I wasn't expecting her to come with me. I don't need a babysitter. Any way, she asked me about a bunch of movies I'd seen already. Then I, trying to be conversational, point to the movie Titanic, and say, "I've never seen that movie." She freaks out a little and tells me I have to watch it! I didn't really want to watch it yet. I knew eventually, some day, I would watch it, but seriously, what's the hurry? The ship sinks. Duh. I've seen so many things making fun of that movie that I pretty much knew what was going to happen, too. Geesh! Then I picked Nacho Libre. A movie I also had not seen yet. I took my movies home and when Sunday rolled around, I still had not watched Titanic, so I figured I would watch it while I sorted the laundry. That movie pretty much sucked. I think Kate Winslet is a excellent actress and she was wonderful. Leo has pretty blue eyes. I'm stretching trying to find something good about this story. Rose's fiance was an ass. Sorry, Mom, there's just no other way to put it. And I thought it was pretty awesome when she spat in his face. I couldn't stand her mother. The Unsinkable Molly Brown wasn't the hero I knew her to be. What a load of crap. And really, did I need to see a car all fogged up and then out of nowhere, a hand slaps the window. I suppose it was supposed to be steamy. But whatever. Then the ship goes down. What a horrible way to die. Freezing, drowning, falling to your death. I really didn't need to watch 1,500 people die that night. Perhaps I am "sheltered" or whatever, but I just didn't like knowing that that is probably actually exactly what happened as the Titanic sunk. I'm traumatized. No! Not really! But I don't recommend this movie to anybody who doesn't like the idea of floating dead babies and children as a romantic movie. I should have said no. I should have listened to myself and decided on the romantic comedy. Titanic is not a romantic comedy! Duh! That crazy lady did not listen to me when I said I was in the mood for a romantic comedy. Whatever. It's my own fault. And now, 12 years after the release of the movie, I can finally say: I've seen Titanic. It sucks.

What a Weekend!

Happy President's Day! This weekend was a crazy one, that's for sure. Friday, Kurtis and I went to see the play Charley's Aunt out at Heritage Theater for Valentin's Day. We were celebrating a little early. The play was hilarious by the way! Those who missed it, well, you will live and life will go on, but you missed something wonderful. The kids were very excited because they got to have McDonald's happy meals for dinner. Kurtis and I hate McDonald's so it's extremely rare that we get anything there. Then we took the boys to my parents' house and let them play with Uncle Jeremy, Uncle Ben, Uncle Ryan and their grandparents. Apparently my parents have forgotten how to take care of kids. They told us not to feed them after 7:30 when we returned. Really? We had no idea! Anyway, they got a little wound up by their uncles, and grandma and grandpa let them have cookies, chocolate milk, and bananas. What did they expect? Well, the kids were probably just really excited to be there in the first place. They love Grandma's house. Kurtis and I were going to eat dinner after the play. I figured it would be about two hours. The play started at 7:40 (ten minutes late), and ended at 10:00. Well, my parents live in a small town. Everything was closed. So we picked up the kids and started to head back to our town. We would just go to a late night drive-thru on our way. No worries, we were leaving at 10:30, we should be home by 11. Then the snow storm picked up. We saw six or seven cars that had slid off the side of the road. One person had even hit a cop car. The back end was smashed up. So we got home a little after 11:30. We ate our dinner. I only had a small chicken wrap because I really don't like eating so late. I figure I might as well just go to bed and eat in the morning. Any way, Kurtis and I also decided to open our presents. From me, he got some xbox games I knew he wanted. Let me think, one is called Eternal Sonata and the other is Soul Calibur 4. He was way excited. He's such a little kid. He got me Deathcab for Cutie's Plans cd and Plain White T's All That We Needed. I was excited. It's always nice when your significant other remembers things that you said you wanted a long time ago. Seriously, for him to remember something like that is nothing short of a miracle.
Saturday I woke up and got ready to leave for play practice. I was about to leave and Kurtis peeked out the blinds to see what the dogs were barking at (there's never anything there!), and he found that it was snowing! Ahhhh! Driving in the snow terrifies me. So the roads sucked, but I made it there alive which is also a miracle because I saw two cars that has slid off the road while I was driving there. The closer I got to my destination, though, the better the roads got. That was nice. At practice, we learned the dance for "Be Our Guest". I really suck at dancing. Maybe it is a confidence issue. But I'm not going to gain confidence in my dancing if I continue to suck at it. We practiced and by the end of the day, I was getting the moves. I still need to work on one part, though.
The way home, was just as bad as the way there, only the opposite. On my way home, I saw about 5 or 6 cars on the side of the road. Some of them may have been witnesses. There was an ambulance and someone being loaded on a back board. I hope they are okay. That is not very fun. I've experienced that. Any way. Um, where was I? Oh, yes. So by the time I arrived home, the roads were much better. So going to practice roads sucked the closer I got to Heritage Theatre and coming home, the closer I was to Heritage Theatre, the worse the roads were. Crazy.
When I got home, we went on with our day which included going to lunch (a Valentine's Day treat for the whole family), the we went to Game Stop and got the kids the game they've been saving up their money to buy: Star Wars the Force Unleashed! They were so excited. Then on to the furniture store so Mom and Dad could get a new mattress! It's coming on Wednesday. I am so excited. No more back pain! (Hopefully.) We were going to go to see The Tale of Despereaux at the dollar theater, but we decided it was too late in the day by then. I had a lesson to prepare for church!
Sunday was Sunday. I taught my lesson to a bunch of 9 year olds who wouldn't be quiet. Not really sure if they learned much. And I sang in the choir. Yippee.
Today, the boys and I went to try and see The Tale of Despereaux at the dollar theater again, but they were sold out. After walking all the way to the theater, I didn't want to walk there just to come home, so I asked the boys if they wanted to see Bolt or Madagascar 2 instead. It took Riley some convincing, but he finally agreed to watch Bolt. It was a cute show. The kids really liked it. Except Kaleb wouldn't tell us if he liked it or not. He said he was keeping it a secret.
We don't know why, but Kaleb has another fever. His temperature is 101.8. That sucks. He didn't really eat lunch today. I made him eat a granola bar even though he told me he wasn't hungry. Then when we were waiting in line at the movie theater, he said his tummy hurt and his legs hurt. I thought he just needed to eat because he really does need to eat more. But he wouldn't eat any popcorn. He had some of the Mike'n Ikes, but I don't know. I'm just wondering if he has cancer because he keeps getting sick. Yeah. I know. A bit paranoid. But that's where my mind goes. At dinner, he ate half a hamburger. That's a good sign isn't it? I don't want to take him to the doctor because the doctor will just say oh, there's nothing wrong with him, and that little consultation will have cost me a $25 copay. I hate it when one (or more!) of them gets sick. So for now, we will just wait and see.

This Tag is Fun!

The funnest tag ever! Here's how it works: The first five people to leave me a comment get something made by me just for them. It can be anything I want, I get to choose. It can be silly or serious, edible or not, but don't plan on anything alive. There are a few rules involved (aren't there always?):

1- I make no guarantees that you will like what I make!
2- What I create will be just for you.
3- It will be done sometime this year (Don't expect grand things if it takes a long time. I'm just lazy!).
4- You have no clue what it's going to be. (The choice is mine! --insert evil laugh here--)
5- I reserve the right to do something extremely strange and/or silly.

The catch is that you must repost this on your blog and offer the same to the first 5 people who do the same on your blog. The first 5 people to do so and leave a comment telling me they've posted on their blog win a hand made, super creative, possibly lovely whatever in the heck I decide! Be sure to post a picture of what you win when you get it!

Snow Day!

At school? Yep! Today, I went to kindergarten with Riley and helped the teacher out with some stuff. Then after reading centers (or whatever they call them), all the kids got on their snow boots and pants and hats and gloves and went sledding! There is a hill on the school's property right next to the parking lot. It's very small, mind you, but the kids sure didn't care. They had a blast! Kaleb amused himself by throwing big chunks of slushy-ice snow at me. He thought it was hilarious. It was. Tuesday, when Riley and Kaleb were doing their Valentines for school, Riley told me he was going to marry Rachel. I don't remember what I said, but I really think it's cute when my boys tell me things like that. I love it. Anyway, I got to meet her today. She's very cute. He was even sharing his sled with her. It was fun to watch. Oh, you bet I took lots of pictures! Have fun!

When Kaleb and I got home, he wanted to have a snowball fight. So we did. He doesn't really understand the concept of a snowball fight yet. I threw snow at him and he forgot to throw snow back at me. Then, he wanted me to not throw snow at him while he threw snow at me. I told him I had to throw snowballs back if he was going to attack me! It was silly and lots of fun. Then he said he was cold. I asked him if he wanted to make a snow angel. He said he didn't know how. So I showed him. Then he said, "Do that again!" But I said, "No, you are cold." He said, "Yeah. I'm ready to go inside." So we did and had hot chocolate. But it wasn't really hot. Just right for him, not so much for me, but what can you do when you want to enjoy your kids while they're still little. Kaleb is good for me. He gets me to play with him. I loved running around being chased by him. He has the best laugh.

Dancing is Hard

So today at rehearsals for Beauty and the Beast I was reminded of my excellent skills of uncoordination. (Yep, I like making up words.) This dance is not hard, so what is my problem? I stuck myself in the back, so I won't be so conspicuous. Trust me. I really suck at dancing. Maybe it's because nobody has ever been able to teach me how to count. Actually, nobody has ever taught me how to count. You go to dance lessons as a little girl and they assume you already know. 5, 6, 7 ,8 & 1, 2, 3, & 4! What the crap is that all about anyway? Maybe I can find some lessons on YouTube. But the director took me aside after rehearsal and asked me to be the Enchanted Fairy at the beginning! I get to turn the prince into a hideous beast! Yay me! And, I also get to be a wolf and attack Belle's father and the Beast! Evil laugh! Evil laugh! Evil laugh! So you'll have to come see if I fall down and if I take the Beast out, or if he takes me! Ha ha ha ha!

I Got the Part!

Well, remember how in my last blog, I said I auditioned for the play "The Women"? Well, I got the part of the lead! I am Mary. Now, go watch the movie. I play the part Meg Ryan played. The movie (which I haven't seen yet) seems quite differnt from the play, though. For one thing the play takes place around 1948. I get to do my hair the way my grandmother did hers. It's so awesome. I love the '40s. So this is very exciting. The play runs April 24th thru May 16th (I think it's the 16th). I'll keep you posted on the drama in that one too. It has 23 women in it. No men! Except the director. He's a man. Ha ha ha! But holy crap am I going to be busy. Two plays at once. What fun!
We did a read-through of the play on Wednesday night. I get to get undressed and the whole audience gets to see me in my underwear (it's a scene in an expensive store where I am trying on evening gowns)! I'm not nervous about that at all! Underwear back then covered more, right?
